Mysore is a small city with no major tourist attraction besides Mysore Palace. Other Indian Yoga cities such as Rishikesh, Dharamsala, Kerala or Goa etc. have always been the tourist destinations for a variety of reasons. The magnificent and sacred river Ganga along with the temples and mountains pull you towards Rishikesh & Haridwar. Dharamsala’s nature and presence of H H Dalai Lama are just perfect to take a place in your to-go list. Kerala, the god’s own country has everything from the beaches – Tea Plantations – Ayurveda. There is no word to describe Goa as its sheer beauty of beaches brings a rejuvenation in the system.
Mysore has almost nothing compared to any other Indian tourist destination offers. Yet, it is becoming one of the fastest growing Yoga paradises. Why so? You will hardly find a tourist who isn’t a Yoga practitioner. Yogis who come to Mysore generally aren’t newbies in Yoga practice. There is a seriousness in yoga practice in Mysore. For Yogis coming to Mysore, practicing Yoga is the primary activity unlike the tourists in other Indian tourist destinations.
Unlike other tourist destinations, Mysore is a very small city wherein people in the Yoga world know each other. It is not possible / harder at least, for anyone to become a Yoga Teacher without necessary skills. Therefore, most of the Yoga Teachers in Mysore have a good reputation and pretty serious about their teaching.
If you are serious about your practice and it is not one among many activities you want to do in India, rather the primary activity, then Mysore is definitely the best option. The lifestyle in Mysore is quiet and relaxed. There is less of “marketing everywhere of everything” mindset which often is obvious in other tourist destinations.
